You keep working. You get up, do things, answer messages. On the outside everything is in order: the title, the salary, the familiar rhythm. But inside there is a feeling that something important has been silent for a long time. Vacation doesn’t help. Weekends don’t restore you. And you start to suspect that this is no longer about being tired.
You are right - it’s not just tiredness
Tiredness is cured by rest. You sleep - you feel better. You go away for a week - you come back with energy.
Burnout works differently. One client described it like this: «I took a vacation. On the third day, on the beach, such loneliness hit me that I couldn’t understand why I felt so good without all of it. That’s when I thought that maybe it was time to change something. And heaviness and fear came crashing down at once.» Vacation doesn’t remove burnout - it makes it visible.
Burnout is not about working too much. It’s about the shape you live in no longer fitting you. The role you perform, the position you hold, the rhythm you live in - all of it was once yours. And then, very slowly, you changed - and the shape stayed the same.
And now it pinches. It makes breathing hard. It restricts your movements. Like an old coat that is the wrong size. You grew out of it long ago, but you keep trying to squeeze into it.
What happens to the body and the head
A chronic mismatch between who you are and what you do is not a metaphor. It is physiology. The body reads it as a constant background threat: cortisol doesn’t switch off, sleep doesn’t restore, the brain works slower and heavier. Irritability, thoughts that won’t stop at night, a feeling of emptiness after the working day - this is not character and not weakness. These are signals.
In parallel, identity starts to crack. A person holds on to the role because the role answers the question «who am I». Money, status, the familiar structure of the day - all of it holds you. To admit that the role no longer fits means to admit that something has to change. And that is scarier than continuing to wait in a coat that pinches.
So people wear it… for years.
Why «just leave» doesn’t work
I see this often: a person understands with their head that something is going wrong, but cannot move. Sometimes because they don’t know where to. Sometimes because a fear sits inside: «what if it’s worse there», «what if I’m wrong», «what if I am the problem». These questions are not solved by willpower or the right motivation. They need time and space, to see what exactly pinches and why it is so hard to let go.
At about three in the morning the question arrives: «Why am I doing this?» You used to have an answer. Now there is only silence. This is not depression and not a crisis in the clinical sense. It is a signal that the old shape can no longer contain you. And that it is time to figure out how you have changed, who you have become and what new shape could hold you.
How I work with this
In my work I don’t start with «what to do» and I don’t offer ready-made schemes. Not because I have nothing to offer - but because before doing, you need to see. Not me - you: what exactly presses. Where the fear of change lives inside. What keeps you in a role that no longer fits. And when this becomes visible, a choice appears that wasn’t there before. Not an abstract «something has to change», but a concrete one - your own.
And when enough awareness and understanding has accumulated, we can move to the next step: action and the fear of it. But that stage still has to be reached.
