You have been making this decision for months. Maybe a year. To leave or to stay. Now or later. You make lists, discuss it with people close to you, read articles - and return to the same point. Thoughts move in circles. Nothing shifts. And slowly a feeling grows that the problem is not the situation - it’s you.
Why analysis doesn’t help
There is an image I know very well in my body. A D-6 parachute. An An-2 aircraft. I am 25, on the plane, a parachute on my back. We have gained altitude.
The first one jumps first - and that’s me. The door opens, and the wind hits my face. Everything below is tiny - nothing recognizable. My body clings. My hands look for support. My legs grow heavy. My pulse speeds up. My head offers: wait, it’s too early, maybe next time.
I stand in the doorway - between the plane and the sky. Deciding whether I am ready to let go and jump. To be left without the familiar supports and take risk in its pure form. I feel fear and excitement at the same time.
Big life decisions are built the same way. Leave or stay. Employment or your own thing. This relationship - or that life you vaguely sense but cannot describe.
We are used to trusting the head: weigh, calculate, find the right answer. But the big forks of life are not a task for the mind.
The body knows first
Being stuck has a physics to it. A clenched jaw in the morning. Breathing with the tops of your lungs. Chronic fatigue that neither workload nor lack of sleep explains. And a strange moment every morning - three seconds between waking up and remembering. Three seconds when everything is fine. And then it hits.
The body already lives inside the decision the head refuses to make. It spends energy not on living - but on holding. Like a submariner saving air: breathing shallow, moving little. Not because he is calm, but because he feels the air running out.
What you are actually afraid of
Behind «I can’t decide» there is almost always something with a name. Not an abstract fear of failure, but something very concrete.
«If I look honestly at my life, I will see how many years I spent on the wrong thing. And that shame burns unbearably.»
«If I leave, they won’t manage without me. And I won’t just be guilty. I will be the person who betrayed them - a deserter.»
But there is a deeper fear - not that «it will be bad», but grief. And it can hold you in a death grip until it is named.
Grief for the lost alternative
To choose one life means to bury the other. Not to postpone it - to metaphorically kill it. And while you stand still, both lives are still alive. Like on the platform of an old railway station: trains arrive and depart, and you sit on a bench and watch the movement. And while you sit, all directions are still open. All lives are still yours.
That is the narcotic of non-decision. And that is also its secret relief. Every morning, waking up in the old life, you feel a split-second «thank god, nothing has changed». That relief is the trap: it makes the unbearable bearable. Just enough to stay one more day.
The freedom that makes you sick
The inability to decide is not weakness of character. It is a collision with something you cannot hide from: you are free. Truly. No one will choose for you. And what frightens is not the consequences - those can be survived. What frightens is authorship. The damned responsibility. Because to decide means to become the one who did it.
That is the vertigo of freedom - when what makes you sick is not the height, but the fact that nothing stops you from stepping.
The part that benefits from not knowing
There is a thing many clients say with difficulty. A part of them, secretly, does not want to decide. Not out of laziness. But because while you stand at the fork, you are still the person with both lives ahead. After the decision - only one. And the part that knows this quietly sabotages every step toward clarity. And while that part is at the wheel, the decision cannot come. Because it comes from a different place.
A real decision is not born of analysis. It is born of contact with what you actually feel - when no one is around and there is no one to live up to. The decision comes from the body, from elusive sensations. «This way.» Or: «Not this way.» It’s not magic. It is what you already know - you just don’t allow yourself to name it.
The future cannot be calculated. But you can stop waiting for guarantees - and step. Take responsibility and make the choice. And then - deal with the consequences.
What I see in my work
People at the point of choice rarely come with the request «help me decide». They come with «I’m tired», «I’m burned out», «I don’t want anything», «I want to untangle».
And only when we manage to slow down does it turn out: this is not the first fork. The person stood at one before - in the previous relationship, at the previous job, in the previous city. Every time they found a way not to choose. And this is not a situation. It is a pattern.
I work not with the decision - but with what stands between a person and their own voice. With the shame for the wasted years. With the guilt toward those who will stay. With the grief for the life that will have to be let go.
Sometimes, when we manage to clear this, the decision comes - from somewhere in the body. Sometimes from despair. Sometimes from a random Tuesday. I don’t know how it will come to you. But I know what stops it from coming.
One second after the decision
I remember that jump. I stand in the doorway. Total chaos in my head. And then I take a step - and the next second I see the plane flying away. It is far. And there is no returning to it. The decision is made. The ripcord, the canopy.
And only hours later I understand: the decision happened not when I «made up my mind». It happened when I let go of the doorframe and stepped into the unknown.
What are you holding on to right now?
